{"id":1263,"date":"2015-09-09T12:07:30","date_gmt":"2015-09-09T11:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/?p=1263"},"modified":"2015-09-20T12:51:55","modified_gmt":"2015-09-20T11:51:55","slug":"altaro-the-new-vm-backup-solution-on-the-block","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/?p=1263","title":{"rendered":"Altaro the new VM backup solution on the block!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Given my background I\u2019ve been kindly asked to review a beta of Virtual Machine backup product from <a title=\"Cool Backup\" href=\"http:\/\/go.altaro.com\/vm-backup\/?LP=virtualplanet&amp;utm_source=virtualizeplanet&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_content=250x250&amp;utm_campaign=avm-free\">Altaro<\/a>. <a title=\"cool backup\" href=\"http:\/\/go.altaro.com\/vm-backup\/?LP=virtualplanet&amp;utm_source=virtualizeplanet&amp;utm_medium=banner&amp;utm_content=250x250&amp;utm_campaign=avm-free\">Altaro<\/a> are not so well known in the VMware community but have been doing Hyper-V backup for some time. More recently they decided to take their simple functionality and apply it to backing up VMware VMs too. When I was asked do this the first thing that came to mind is I should perform and run through the same tests with Altaro that I did to the other products listed in the VM backup bake off paper I authored found &gt;<a href=\"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/?p=1071\">HERE<\/a>&lt;.<\/p>\n<p>So this is what I found out through testing Altaro. Where applicable I also scored each test. Best score = 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ease of prerequisites: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just a single executable and very simple install.<\/li>\n<li>Only had to deploy a windows server.<\/li>\n<li>Altaro installed any prerequisites for me<\/li>\n<li>Score = 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ease of Install:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Super simple to install<\/li>\n<li>Next next next , that\u2019s all it took<\/li>\n<li>Score = 5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Time to Deploy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very very quick install. Took no time at all<\/li>\n<li>Score = 5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ease of post install config:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prompts you to walk through steps<\/li>\n<li>Not sure it has any transport mode other than NBD mode, although it is a beta<\/li>\n<li>Score = 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ease to setup job:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Would love to see a walk though wizard\u00a0. Although it has a different approach to scheduling. (Note: Altaro told me that this will be coming in v6)<\/li>\n<li>Also has a nice drag and drop function so you can drop VMs into schedules.<\/li>\n<li>Score = 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-20-30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1267 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-20-30-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"2015-08-24_08-20-30\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-20-30-300x171.jpg 300w, http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-20-30.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Backup Job Realisation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup completed smoothly and first time without hassle<\/li>\n<li>Score = 5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Backup Performance:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Time to complete backup is 21 minutes. Now this is comparable to the other products I test in the <a href=\"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/?p=1071\">VM Backup Bake off paper<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>No Mb\/s speed indication though. But I have to remember this is the Beta of v1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/backup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1268\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/backup.jpg\" alt=\"backup\" width=\"500\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/backup.jpg 767w, http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/backup-300x24.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Integration with CBT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yes CBT integration<\/li>\n<li>No CBT restore, not that I could find<\/li>\n<li>Score = 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Restore Job Realisation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completed no hassle<\/li>\n<li>Nice feature to disable NIC on restore. Not only product to offer this though<\/li>\n<li>Score = 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Restore Performance:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Time to complete restore is 9 minutes. Again this is comparable to the other products I test in the <a href=\"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/?p=1071\">VM Backup Bake off paper<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/restore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1269\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/restore.jpg\" alt=\"restore\" width=\"550\" height=\"38\" srcset=\"http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/restore.jpg 770w, http:\/\/read.virtualizeplanet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/restore-300x21.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>File-level Restore:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fairly Straight forward but no option for direct restore.<\/li>\n<li>Unsure about which file-systems it supports. Test was performed on NTFS<\/li>\n<li>Score = 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Space Optimisation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Has compressed feature but unsure if\u00a0 it offers any form of de-dupe (Note: I was informed it has in VM dedupe function)<\/li>\n<li>Score = 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Self-service Portal:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Could\u00a0 not see any sign of self-service portal although this is beta product<\/li>\n<li>This is important to my line of work.<\/li>\n<li>Score = 0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Ability to Backup VSS Apps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Has VSS function<\/li>\n<li>Option to truncate logs too<\/li>\n<li>Score = 5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Ability to Backup non VSS Apps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Only with Pre-Freeze scripts, so I believe<\/li>\n<li>Score = 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Support for physical server:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0I could not find this option<\/li>\n<li>Score = 0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>DR capabilities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Off-site capabilities<\/li>\n<li>No replication function<\/li>\n<li>Score = 3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-48-52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1270\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-48-52.jpg\" alt=\"2015-08-24_08-48-52\" width=\"222\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Availability:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nice sandbox feature<\/li>\n<li>Score = 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-50-49.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1271\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualizeplanet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2015-08-24_08-50-49.jpg\" alt=\"2015-08-24_08-50-49\" width=\"225\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>API functionality:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unknown<\/li>\n<li>In this day and age of SDDC and self-service API driven functionality is a most for me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Multi-hypervisor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Hyper-V<\/li>\n<li>VMWare<\/li>\n<li>Score = 2. Seems low but comparable to other products on the market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Cost:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Very competitive cost with this product. Altaro license per host not CPU socket and the cost is \u00a3390<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I believe I have been fair in my assessment of the product as with all the other products and I conclude that for a first attempt at dipping their toe in the VMWare space this is a very very good effort. Doesn\u2019t do everything but will capture the requirements of most organisations. And the most compelling part is the cost. Out of all the products I have tested it was super super easy to install and setup. Drag and drop scheduling took a bit to get used to but maybe that\u2019s the future.
