Cloud Analogies

Just for a bit of fun I’m creating a new section of my blog called “Cloud Analogies”. In work I seem to be drawing a lot of parallels so people can understand why we are making certain decisions about cloud solutions. And of course me being me I have to put a funny twist on them. So lets start with:

#################################################

Customer: Walks into a car showroom. I want to purchase a horse?

Car Salesperson: We only sell cars here but yes I can get you a horse!

Q. Why are you trying to sell a BMW when the client wants a Skoda?

A. I’m not selling a BMW, I’m selling a Toyota Hybrid. Slightly more expenses than a Skoda but savings are in the ROI.

Q. Why are you selling a cloud layer when the client doesn’t want cloud like features?

A. In the olden times if you wanted to cook dinner you had to go into the forest, cut down a tree, split some logs to fuel a stove. This process was free expect for your time. Then the government said we are going to pump gas into your houses directly to cook dinner and they’ll charge you for it. Yes there is a cost but now your time is freed up to do other things like knitting crochets!

Customers don’t know what is good for them until they get it…..

If you have any “Cloud Analogies” let me have them and I’ll give you a plug.

vCO – which Java version

I started to use vCenter Orchestrator more recently and I found issues with later versions of the Java runtime and the vCO client. The one that works for me is v7 update 45 64bit. To save you sometime trying to find older copies of Java here is a link to the one I used.

Installing the vCAC 6 IaaS component doesn’t have to be hell.

Yesterday I pretty much spent a whole day attempting to install the IaaS component of vCAC 6. I’d referred to Jad El-Zien’s guide and Kendrick Coles post on the topic. I must have tried 20 times before I got it right so here are my tips to getting installed without errors on a Windows 2008 R2 Server:

  • Install the vCAC VA and Identity VA as per Jad or Kendricks instructions found HERE and HERE
  • Make sure when installing the above appliances that you have static IPs and DNS is solid
  • Install a VM with Windows 2008 R2 SP1
  • Don’t use IP6 and make sure you use a static IP address and the hostname can be resolved
  • Update the VM with windows updates BUT DO NOT INSTALL .NET FRAMEWORK 4.5.1
  • Reboot and restart windows update again and keep doing this until there are no updates left expect .Net Framework 4.5.1
  • Browse to https://FQDN of vCAC VA:5480/Installer and download and install .Net framework 4.5
  • Download the powershell script to prepare the IaaS server to speed up a lot of the steps mentioned in Jad’s guide found HERE
  • Reboot
  • Browse to https://FQDN of vCAC VA:5480/Installer and download and install setup for vCAC IaaS server as per Jad’s instructions
  • And you should be good to go
